The Breitling Navitimer was introduced in 1952, using the design and movement of Breitling’s famous Chronomat chronograph. It was then transformed into a powerful aviation instrument. With its sliding scale bezel designed to solve logarithmic calculations in flight, the Navitimer was more than just a watch; it was a wrist navigation computer for today’s pilots.
True to the aviation industry, the first Navitimer watches carried the logos of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Early Navitimers, such as the number 806, used the Venus 178 movement. Breitling improved nautical timepieces throughout the 1950s and 1960s, replacing the Venus 178 with the Valjoux 72 movement in 1954, and eventually switching to the Valjoux 7740 movement in the late 1960s. The Navitimer with Valjoux 7740 had a new achievement: the date.
With the 1960s and 1970s, the quartz watch had gone from being an experiment to a large-scale commercial success. Replica Breitling Watches then faced a crisis. It tried to adapt by offering the quartz Navitimer as well as its own digital LCD display. But this was not enough to save the watchmaker.
Breitling’s financial problems led to a change in ownership of the company, and with it the Navitimer. The watch reappeared in the 1990s with the Valjoux 7750 movement and in 2003 with the ETA 2892 movement.
